ANOTHER day, another Tesco plan for York and once again in what is currently a pub. The latest concerns the Corner House in Burton Stone Lane and it will come as no surprise that not everyone is happy.

Small businesses in the area worry about a price war between Tesco and the nearby Sainsbury’s, which might seem good news for shoppers, but there is a wider impact to consider.

The current trend is for supermarket giants to downsize, so pubs offer the perfect fit. But locals have always been at the hub of any community and too many are being lost.

Perhaps it’s too easy, because planning permission isn’t required for a change of use. Some think it should be and we have some sympathy with that view. After all, people would then have a voice in the decision-making process, and who knows what plans might be forthcoming.
