SUMMER still refuses to go even though we’re into September. Purists may tell you there are still a couple of weeks before autumn begins officially, but at this time of year thoughts of picnic baskets start to diminish.
That said, there was still a last hurrah for al fresco champagne, strawberries and cream, because yesterday The Press Family Raceday was held on Knavesmire.
And the weather couldn’t have been better; cloudless skies endless sunshine and temperatures into the high teens.
So the scene was set fair for one of the most friendly days on the racecourse’s calendar.
Of course some went for a serious flutter and we hope it paid off, however, most were there for a good old fashioned family day out and, of course, a final excuse to get out the hamper and tartan blanket before the weather finally turns.
Interestingly, this is the only fixture held at Knavesmire on a Sunday and that makes it rather special. As marketing chief James Brennan tells us, it’s also a consciously relaxed day, designed to welcome new racegoers, especially from the York environs.
The event has gone from strength to strength during its 15 year history and, as we saw yesterday, it continues to offer thrills and smiles in equal measure.
The Press Family Raceday; it does exactly what it says on the tin.
