DURING the 2012 Olympic Games, if Yorkshire had been a country, it would have finished seventh in the medals table. But when it comes to honours, the county is down there with the also-rans. As head of the civil service Sir Bob Kerslake tells us today, just 4.8 per cent of the 2014 awards went to Yorkshire and the Humber.

Sir Bob goes on to make a personal plea for members of the public to nominate people they think would fit the bill and we agree with him. There are some outstanding individuals in this part of England, just look at the number of nominees we get every year for The Press’s Community Pride Awards.

We think they all deserve a red letter day, so come on York, let’s get their fantastic achievements recognised on a national basis.
