IT all began in the West Yorkshire town of Todmorden, then the idea of incredible edible crossed the Pennines and landed in York.
It’s a simple concept; find an unused patch of land in the city centre and turn it into a vegetable plot. Carrots in car parks, kale by the kerb side, that sort of thing. And they are there for the taking, all free of charge.
Edible York has been a huge success from the day it was launched in 2009, with beds on Whip-Ma-Whop-Ma-Gate, Paragon Street and Peasholme Green offering healthy nutritional produce.
But the group is not content to rest on its laurels. On Saturday they are running an open edible gardens event and anyone with a parcel of land can join in by helping others to learn about the pleasures of growing your own. We think it’s a great idea and have always supported Edible York. This is a very positive and unusual concept that helps to spread the message about healthy eating, while helping many to manage their food budget. It would be great to see the project go city wide.
