SOME anniversaries are bitter sweet. A year ago today The Press launched its Stamp out Poverty campaign; we wish there had been no need to do so but with the cost of living rising and wages falling in real terms, hardship is a reality for too many families.

Indeed one in five people do not even earn the Living Wage and the government’s legally binding commitment to end child poverty in just six years’ time looks increasingly like a pipe dream.

That said, much has been done to improve the picture in York over the last 12 months.

Help has been given to almost 2,000 people in financial difficulty, there has been a 100 per cent take up of free childcare places among eligible two year olds and steps are being taken to ensure families who need free school meals benefit from them.

We’ve made a start, but there is still a long way to go.
