TODAY - exactly 100 years since the assassination of the Austrian Archduke Franz Ferdinand - the York Castle Museum’s long-awaited First World War exhibition opens.

It is an exhibition like no other York has seen. The centrepieces are two trenches - one German, one British - which give you a glimpse into the horrors of life on the front line 100 years ago.

But there is so much more: the real stories behind the museum’s three First World War Victoria Crosses; a taste of life on the home front back in York; a medical tent; a supply depot.

This is an exhibition that tells the story of the whole four years of the war. It will leave you moved, perhaps overwhelmed. But it is definitely one not to be missed.
