YORK Minster has hit the jackpot with a £10 million grant from the Heritage Lottery Fund.

The funds will go towards a £19 million appeal to restore the crumbling East Front, create a stylish new piazza entranceway from Deangate, provide full disabled access into the crypt and install new digital and computer-generated displays about the history and purpose of the cathedral.

The Dean of York, the Very Reverend Keith Jones, said: ""This is wonderful news. Now we can make the Minster a place of which we can be even more proud."

Actress Dame Judi Dench, a long-term supporter of the Minster, also hailed the grant, saying: "It's marvellous news that the Heritage Lottery Fund has been so generous and ensured that the vital restoration work of this most wonderful and iconic building will now take place."

What a silly point that is....a swimming pool would be better. This does raise a good point though, with £10m we could build a class football team. We dont need the minster anymore, i think its just become an eye-sore anyroad.

Does this mean that the ridiculous £5 charge to enter what is laughingly called a "place of worship" will now be scrapped as the justification for it has now gone?

The Minster is part of the attraction to our city, and I think it`s money well spent. We all benefit indirectly from tourist money coming into the City.

I haven't seen any extra cash going into my bank account either! Plenty being paid out towards a piazza for tourists though!

It's about time the lottery fund was used for a deserving cause. As for some of the emails above, I shan't waste my time commenting.

I see where you're coming from gresmit but after they used £200M+ for the Royal Opera it's nice that some of the money has headed north!

Looks like you misunderstood me Silversurfer - what I meant was "It's about time the lottery fund was used for a deserving cause such as this". I was born in York and so am justifiably proud of the Minster.

So am I gresmit - but I think there are far more deserving charities than the Church of England or the Royal Opera!

Oh please do, dont be a spoil sport! Why dont they spend the money repairing Foutains Abbey - that looks a right mess!

Build a prison there with all the chavs in and then tourists (£5) and York residents (free) can pelt them in the stocks with misiles of their choice.

I see the Minster as one of the great man-made structures of medieval times and we have a responsibility to maintain it for future generations. The Church of England is irrelevant in this respect.

When people come to York, they spend money. That money creates jobs.

Exactly, and they spend that money because they are here, and they come here because they want to see the minster and other historic attractions ....so what's your point?

Well we should encourage more stag and hen nights and more drunks for the race events as that also creates jobs and brings money to the city! The money should go to building a wall to stop tourist coming in and to stop you coming in as well!

There I was thinking we were having an intelligent discussion. I don't need to come in, as I'm already "in". I was born here mate, not at the funny farm like you.

Nothing wrong with stag and hen nights for the most part. Their are loads of pubs to visit if you want a quiet drink, it`s called freedom of choice.

where the hell does all the money go?!
the minster always has scaffolding around it, obscuring one face or another.
Why not leave it as-is for a few years, and if lightning strikes it, then god obviously isn't very pleased with the church!

That businesses and people pay taxes, and tax revenue is spent on public services, which we all benefit from.

Seriously, you must be a moron.
