A victory for The Press campaign

9:56am Thursday 24th May 2007

Evening parking charges for residents are to be scrapped as soon as possible; marking a victory for The Press's Stop The Highway Robbery campaign, which was first launched back in 2003/04.

Labour leader David Scott, whose party opposed the charges, said: "We are delighted. We made a promise and it's nice to be able to deliver on that promise. We feel the charges have been damaging for the evening economy."

ResPark costs are to be reviewed; and the freeze on other parking charges will remain throughout 2007.

The council will work with bus firms to develop a "cashless" payment option, along the lines of the Oyster card in London. The move should help overcome fare-paying problems on York's ftr buses.

Cycling facilities at York Station will be addressed; improvements will be sought when the Park&Ride contract is renewed, and the council will press the Government for increased funding.
