OUR Guardian Angels appeal is set to get a new boost - from enterprising university students.

A group of students from the University of York are planning an ambitious internet enterprise - and they hope it could also raise funds for our appeal.

Their idea is to create a new webpage called The Yorker which will allow students to access a wide range of information about all the events available to them on campus.

They hope the site, to be launched next year, will attract lucrative advertising and they have chosen Guardian Angels as their charity of choice to benefit from the proceeds.

Project co-founder Daniel Ashby, a 20-year-old politics and philosophy student, said: "We wanted to do something that was based in York and we also wanted the money to go to a charity where we could see concrete changes.

"We wanted students to be able to see those changes. The building of the unit is something they can see - it will give them an incentive to keep looking on over the year."

When it is up-and-running, The Yorker website will give students the chance to access an interactive calendar of activities on campus as well as university and national news.

"We wanted to expand the amount of people who are involved in university life, so they can see everything that's going on," said Daniel.

The group have set up a non-profit making company for their website, which they are working on outside of their normal studies.

Meanwhile, the recent Angel Aid musical spectacular at the Tap & Spile pub, in Monkgate, York, raised more than £650 for our appeal.

Organiser Jack Merry said he was thrilled with the response.

"It was a brilliant night - we've had some great feedback," he said. "The acts were amazing and everyone was really generous."

Our Guardian Angels appeal aims to raise £300,000 for a new high dependency unit at York Hospital children's ward.

The money will fund two life-saving rooms with new, specialised equipment.

The new unit will mean far more youngsters can be treated here in York, rather than having to travel further afield.

It will also mean the right equipment is available to deal with sick youngsters when they arrive, rather than having to be moved from elsewhere.
