James Alexander writing to voters urging them to back Debt Of Honour campaign

THOUSANDS of letters are to be sent out to people in York asking them to back The Press’s fight to win a fair deal for North Yorkshire’s wounded war heroes.

Our Debt Of Honour campaign – which has already drawn the support of around 700 readers – aims to force a rethink of the way troops left with the terrible physical and mental scars of service to the nation are compensated.

Now Coun James Alexander, Labour’s prospective Parliamentary candidate for the new York Outer seat at the next General Election, has launched a three-pronged injection of backing, which will see residents living in the area he hopes to represent receive letters driving home the importance of getting behind our quest for dignity and justice.

The letters will be circulated next month. Coun Alexander has also set up a petition on the Downing Street website and a Facebook group calling for people to lend their voice to Debt Of Honour’s objectives.

“My political colleagues in York have signed up to The Press’s campaign, as have people from all different political parties,” Coun Alexander said.

“I wanted to do my bit to help this very important campaign.

“If there is an injustice felt in compensation claims, an independent review – one of Debt of Honour’s aims – should take place.

“We owe it to those who have served their country to provide them with the best care and treatment possible. They are sacrificing their lives and their physical and mental health for our well-being, so they deserve every piece of support they get.”

As well as securing a review of the Ministry of Defence’s much-maligned Armed Forces Compensation Scheme, Debt Of Honour is also calling for more immediate support and funding for wounded personnel and proper recognition of the effects of psychological, as well as physical, injury.

Among the campaign’s supporters are the Archbishop of York, Dr John Sentamu, the Royal British Legion and other organisations which help injured servicemen and women, and those whose own lives have been ravaged by doing their duty. You can join them by adding your name to the petition>>

Shame this man is not running his Party. Instead the man in charge can welcome talent show winners to Downing Street and has yet to find the time to show respect at Wooten Bassett.

Gordon Brown is a disgrace.

Do you think he is truly interested beyond the opportunity to mailshot hundreds of retired and elderly tory voters (who will definately vote) on an issue they will care deeply about? All Cllr Alexander is looking to do is achieve a decent result in an unwinnable seat to be gifted a winnable one in the next election. The best thing is simply to ignore him. And no I have no political awareness - just political antanae

Oops meant to say I have no political allegiance - then again if I am wrong maybe I don't have any political awareness!

Dear Independent voice,

I do not think that is a fair criticism. I am interested in helping my local paper in a worthy cause and I want to encourage voters in my constituency to sign up. I could have easily ignored this campaign which some will see as critical of the Government I support. Besides why would a Labour man be targeting Tories? Don’t you think this is barking up the wrong tree? I think it would be wrong to ignore this valuable campaign; this is not a partisan issue. I think all candidates in York Outer could do more good by giving up one of their leaflets to support this cause than continue putting out the usual drivel that says how fantastic they are. If I didn’t care about this cause I would not be sending out the letters. I encourage all to sign up to this campaign whether people like me or not. People can sign up on the The Press website, on facebook or on the Downing Street wesbite. People do not have to go through me to sign up to this worthy cause.

I agree, HeworthSnapper..... actions speak louder than words and at least James is doing something every little thing that anyone does that helps veterans suffering from the issues this campaign aims to help has to be a good thing. After all there are many worthy causes he could be taking up... I for one am pleased he has chosen this campaign to back, and No I don't support labour and am certainly not an elderly tory just someone else that supports this campaign.

Ok fine - your motives are good but why do you need to echo the Press Campaign - your prospective electors can read the article and make their own decision can't they? To the outsider it appears you are simply attaching your name to a campaign where the reverse position is inarguable - who wouldn't accept that service people deserve our gratitude? I am afraid that I see in you the tactics so often employed by the senior elected figures in your party and think why do we want more of this? Find an unpopular and unfashionable cause to make your own and then you will demonstrate your mettle - until then I remain unimpressed

Dear Independent voice,

With all due respect I am not trying to impress you and not everyone reads The Press, and so not everyone will know about this campaign. My letter will go to many people who will not yet be aware of this worthy cause. I am not sure what unpopular campaign I should be running in your opinion. In my experience unpopular campaigns lack the public support to become a reality. However, you can go to my website and look under the news section for the things I have been involved in. The major campaign I have been in running is the “York Fares Fair” campaign on bus pricing, quality of service and availability. Perhaps if you feel strongly against the candidates for York Outer and you are an independent as you say, then you should stand against me and my opponents as an independent candidate?
