A THIRD North Yorkshire MP has thrown her weight behind our drive to win a fairer deal for courageous wounded war heroes.
The Press’ Debt Of Honour campaign is continuing to gather pace as we aim to pile the pressure on the Government to properly compensate and care for servicemen and women injured while doing their duty and putting their lives on the line for their country.
It has already attracted huge support from our readers, the Royal British Legion and charities which help physically and mentally scarred military personnel, as well as MPs Hugh Bayley and John Grogan, who represent York and Selby respectively.
Now Vale of York MP Anne McIntosh – whose constituency includes several military bases – is backing Debt Of Honour as another welcome salvo towards forcing the Ministry of Defence (MoD) to overhaul the way it compensates injured troops.
“My enthusiastic support goes to the campaign and I congratulate The Press for launching it,” she said.
“The massive contribution not just of those who have lost their lives, but those who have been seriously injured and now have to live with the consequences needs to be recognised.
“While physical wounds seem to be well-treated, if only after a period of time, the issue of psychological trauma has to be addressed as there appears to be a big gap in this area. Those who have served their country will need treatment for the rest of their lives and the least we can do is give them the best care possible – it is what they deserve.
“Anything we can do to raise public awareness and force the Government to look at this issue will have my total support.”
Debt Of Honour is calling for an independent review into the MoD’s Armed Forces Compensation Scheme, more immediate support and funding for injured personnel and proper recognition of the effects of psychological trauma.
