THE Press crusade to change the law on child kidnappers has won a major newspaper award.
Our hard-hitting Change It! fight to protect children from kidnappers by closing a loophole in the law won Campaign Of The Year at the Newsquest Editoral And Newspaper Sales Awards held in London last night.
It is the second industry victory for our campaign, which also scooped a Yorkshire Press Award last November.
Kevin Booth, editor of The Press, said: "It was a fantastic result. It's virtually unheard of for a change in the law to be brought about in such a short period of time - and for that we have got many people to thank.
"It was a fantastic team effort by staff at The Press. But we shouldn't forget the role played by a very special individual, and that's Natalie Hick, for everything she did, and the bravery she and her mum June showed - effectively becoming the public face of our campaign."
The awards saw more success for The Press when political reporter Gavin Aitchison was named Trainee Reporter Of The Year.
Gavin's winning news stories included coverage of Pocklington school girl Katie Brown, who waited six days for emergency dental treatment.
The Press was also commended in the Video Clip Of The Year category, while our newspaper sales department gained commendation in the Team Of The Year section of the awards for their work with editorial staff on newspaper sales initiatives.
Our sister paper, The Gazette & Herald, was highly commended in the Retail Sales Initiative category.
Press reporters Sam Southgate, Tom Stirling and Gavin Aitchison were awarded their Newsquest diplomas - out of only four trainees across the country to be given them.
