Firm runs up century
John Latimer
John Latimer

A CENTENARY of continuous trading is being celebrated by JWPCreers, one of York and North Yorkshire's best-known professional services practices, independent accountants and business advisers.

The practice, which has 11 partners and 70 staff, is marking the event with a series of buffet lunches throughout this year for long-standing clients and past and present staff. A gala dinner is planned for next year.

The practice was established in 1898 by Mr H W Pulleyn who was joined by Mr H L Creer in 1904 when the firm became Pulleyn Creer. JWPCreers traces its centenary from when Mr Creer became a partner in 1908.

The partnership split in 1952 and the practice's name changed to Creer Etty Rank & Co which was based in Coppergate before moving to St Andrew's House, Spen Lane, in March 1986.

The partnership shortened its name to Creers in 1993 and, in 2006, merged with JW Pickles & Co, which was founded in Leeds in 1922 and later moved to Selby.

The result was JWPCreers which has its York office in Foss Place and is among the largest independent accountants and business advisers in York and North Yorkshire.

Senior partner, John Latimer said: "In these fast-changing times when companies are launched, grow and merge, or are sold, often in the space of only a decade, surviving more than a century is a real achievement and we feel part of the region's commercial history.

"The technological and legislative changes in the last decade alone have revolutionised our profession, as they have so many others, and it is hard even to hazard a guess at how accountants may operate 25 years from now, let alone 100.

"No doubt the basic principles of the profession will be unchanged and one would like to think that JWPCreers will manage to thrive into the 22nd century as part of a city which has witnessed so much history."
