CHARITIES must be included in the challenge to tackle youth unemployment, Involve Yorkshire and Humber, the agency supporting the voluntary sector in the region has said.
Involve Yorkshire & Humber said charities have much experience in getting people back to work but recent big business-led initiatives like the Work Programme seem to be missing the locally-focussed, smaller charities, and some charities, who have worked successfully with unemployed people, are being forced out of business.
Judy Robinson, chief executive of Involve Yorkshire & Humber, said: “We want to see a programme that pays the rate for the job and uses the charity sector’s skills with young people.
“We are calling on government to work with us directly at the local level to develop a plan of action.”
She said charities were ideally placed to create jobs quickly and knew how to work with people who have been unemployed.
