York law firms show their strength in Legal500

YORK’S law firms have shown their weight in the Yorkshire legal market with a strong presence in this year’s Legal 500.

The independent research listed the major York firms, Harrowells, Langleys, Denison Till and Dickinson Dees, in a number of sectors.

In the competitive corporate and commercial sector, Langleys is ranked a tier three firm alongside firms from Leeds and Harrowells, Denison Till and Dickinson Till are all among the Leeds-dominated list.

Langleys was ranked in the second tier in employment law, with a particular mention for Nick Sheppard’s experience, representing the defendant in personal injury cases and commercial property.

Harrowells was described as: “certainly giving larger law firms in Yorkshire a run for their money” and was heralded particularly for its work in agriculture and estates, as was Denison Till.

The York branch of Dickinson Dees was noted for its planning team which has advised on major regeneration proposals.

Andrew Lindsay, corporate partner at Denison Till, said the profile of York in the Legal500 and the increased competition in York is good for the sector because it adds credibility to York’s standing as a commercial and legal centre.

“Whilst Leeds is inevitably a very big financial and business centre, over recent years some of the York law firms have established themselves as very credible alternatives. A number of commercial law firms are able to win work in Leeds and West Yorkshire from businesses who don’t want their work to be done in the goldfish bowl of Leeds.”

York firms Rollits, Ison Harrison, Pattinson & Brewer, Minster Law and Grays also featured and Harrogate firms McCormicks and Hempsons also featured strongly.
