Sainsbury’s supermarket in Foss Bank, York to be revamped

SAINSBURY’S is refurbishing its supermarket in Foss Bank, York, this September.

The supermarket announced the plans as it confirmed it would no longer be extending its Foss Bank store into the adjoining premises formerly occupied by Homebase, which is now up for sale.

A spokesperson for Sainsbury’s said the supermarket had decided to upgrade the existing supermarket instead.

He said: “We are always looking of ways to improve the shopping experience for our customers. Works to refresh our Foss Bank store are scheduled to take place over a number of weeks in September and will be planned to ensure minimal disruption to our customers.”

Earlier this month, it was announced that home and garden store HomeSense, a sister company of TK Maxx, had signed a deal to move into Foss Islands Retail Park creating 35 jobs when it opens in August. Waitrose is also moving into the old MFI site on Foss Islands Road, creating 180 jobs.

The old Homebase unit has been empty since the retailer moved to a 35,000 sq ft store in Foss Islands Road in March 2008.

Sainsbury’s, which owns the site, was given planning permission by City of York Council in April 2004 to demolish both its current store and the Homebase outlet next door and replace them with a larger supermarket.

Coun Janet Looker, Labour councillor for Guildhall ward, said: “This is a real shame. Expansion of Sainsbury’s would have created new jobs for the city at a time when they are needed more than ever. I just hope whoever purchases this site will be interested in creating as many if not more jobs.”

So they're going to be closed just as the new Waitrose opens. Not the most creative scheduling...

Nope, Waitrose is set to open in November so the scheduling is quite clever in that it will re-open around the same time. That way people will go out of curiosity and they're probably hoping this will detract from Waitrose's grand opening. Might not work but hey ho. Sainsburys can do what they like as far as I'm concerned as long as it doesn't involve any more self service checkouts!

this branch of sainsbury is brilliant - always plenty of room and straight through the tills - tons of stuff on shelves etc cant fault it..

I hope they make a better job than Monks Cross.

More petrol pumps but no room to get in or out when all in use. Car parking spaces increased by making the spaces narrower, more dents and scrathches to your car. Same products inside but spread out more, very poor menswear department, a lot of which were dirty when they reopened. The cafe reopened and ran out of food first day so they turned customers away instead of going onto the shop floor.

Do these people not realise that Asda is opposite with far better facilities and you don't have to wait outside for the shop to open. We have shopped at Sainsburys and eagerly awaited the reopening, however were very dissapointed with the finished product, so dont hold your breath for Foss Island

The petrol station is much better, more pumps and room to pass cars when they are side by side at each bank of pumps.
Although I agree with richard22 that the parking spaces are too narrow.

The cafe does not serve coffee like they did and not to our liking. The maps of the store provided are not really any use as the food and grocery parts do not show in detail where anything is.
At first they provided staff to help but they seem to have been withdrawn and some staff now do not know any better than customers where to go to get what they want.

Waste of time, might as well leave the site and put the council HQ there in portacabins! Can't compete with Waitrose / Morrisons / Netto locally which cater for all the social classes, so shoplifters then?

Where anywhere in this report does it mention the store having to close exactly?

If you want to wait outside the store at 8am for it to open then wouldn't you say thats your own problem, you know the opening times so don't go then, how stupid can you be!!!!!

What you mean can't compete..... Waitrose isn't making anything coz it isn't even built, Netto is just a cattle-market of imported krap for the scrotes and Morrisons is prayed upon by the local gypo's over the road. I'd say Sainsbury's has a fair deal wouldn't you? It also DOES cater for all classes as Waitrose is fancy and over-priced for the elderly and Netto is just a cheapo shop of krap, run by people on day release.

Why not put the Stella and the strong cider nearer the door. Those poor wretches have to struggle so far...

Are you been sarcastic? The reason there is plenty of room is due to the lack of customers and as for the tons of stuff on shelves, all I can say to that is what about a lack of choice as this store does not stock enough products for a weekly shop.

The reason why the cafe did not get any goods off the shop floor is due to the fact that all products are ready made. Meals go in the microwave and the soup is preprepared and gets reheated. Same as the bakery the bread gets delivered and put in the freezer. Then it is defrosted put in the oven and sold as fresh bread. Quite agree though that there the goods are spread out with no new products and even frozen food has been condensed. All Sainsburys want to sell is fatty foods as you see a wall of ice cream and cakes in the freezers and hardly any thing else. I have stopped shopping there and look forward to Waitrose opening.
