Web firm focuses on local talent

AN expanding York web design company which publicly stopped outsourcing to India in favour of using talent on its doorstep, has won a major design contract on the strength of it.

Architectural metal workers Chris Topp & Co, based at Moor Lane Industrial estate in Tholthorpe, near Easingwold has employed Explosive Designs to develop a new website after reading in The Press of its recommendation to steer clear of companies that out-source their work to India.

Andy Whitehead, a manager at Chris Topp’s said: “We are a local company and we wanted to know that people on the end of the telephone completely understand our requirements.

“Our website is an important part of our marketing and the fact that Explosive Designs are local to us with a 100 per cent locally-based work force, was a major consideration for us.” Chris Topp & Co, which also has two forges in Carlton Husthwaite, near Thirsk, is best known in the UK as a leader of heritage iron work restoration – claiming to be the only company in the world still rolling genuine wrought iron. It also wants to be recognised as a designer and creator of new modern ironwork pieces. The Press in February reported how James Riley, managing director of Explosive Designs, of York Business Park, Nether Poppleton warned firms in the city to take care before they are lured by the notion of lower costs in the east.

He said he had to reject four out of his five Indian contractors in Hyderabad after shoddy work and instead had taken on two local web developers.
