STUDENTS at York College will take part in an intensive “speed dating” session with the region’s high-tech business people on Wednesday.
The students, studying A-level and National Diploma Applied Science, are hoping that their fast-talking rendezvous will help them to earn their STEM (Science Technology, Engineering and Maths) Leaders Award.
They are planning to learn from the STEM professionals more about health and safety in the workplace and other specific sector details.
Students have about seven minutes with each business person to find out as much as they can about their job role and background.
The information will not only be useful for help with future careers, but also an ideal grounding for various projects and coursework.
The event is being oganised by the North Yorkshire Business & Education Partnership.
Business partners taking part will be the University of York (Centre for Immunology and Infection), English Heritage, the Environment Agency, the Food and Environment Research Agency of Sand Hutton, Filpot Ltd and York Hospital. Zena Chui, STEM support adviser at the partnership, said: “These speed-dating style events are an innovative and fun way of introducing young people to a massive variety of business people and job roles.”
