YORK'S newest law firm has got off to a flying start after landing a string of clients - both local and international.

YorSolicitor, based in Wheldrake, has been set up by Dr Eileen McMorrow to provide company law services including specialist intellectual property and IT advice.

She is well known in the York area, having worked previously with some of the city's larger law firms, including Langleys and Harrowell Shaftoe.

She said today that YorSolicitor was set up at the end of last year, and had been gathering pace through 2007.

"YorSolicitor has been set up to meet the demand for general business law and specialised services such as intellectual property and IT law with fee levels far below the larger law firms," she said.

"Our formula is proving successful, so much so that we are attracting overseas clients as well as local ones."

She said it was acting for clients in Canada, and had also attracted interest from the Far East, as well as clients closer to home in York and elsewhere in England.

She said she had picked up the Canadian business after attending a "Canada Showcase" event held at St William's College earlier this year, organised by yorkengland. com, the inward investment board for York and North Yorkshire.

Representatives from the Canadian High Commission joined the area's business people in an event designed to highlight the growing opportunities for collaborative projects between businesses in the UK and Canada.

Dr McMorrow said she had been invited to attend the International Bar Association Conference in Singapore in October with UK Trade and Investment.

As well as being a qualified solicitor, Dr McMorrow also holds a PhD in plant biochemistry and has worked closely with the city's growing bio science and IT sector.

She said that intellectual property rights were becoming more complicated because of the internet. "I advise people how to identify the property rights that are important, and how to protect and exploit them," she said.

She said she was also involved in general commercial work and the law relating to IT and commerce, and also in commercial mediation - all growth areas.

"We are assisting smaller businesses with a cost effective legal service to ensure their day to day business contracts and procedures are working efficiently."
