York businesses optimistic for year ahead Last week’s GDP figures revealed that the country is finally out of the recession, with reports of economic growth for the first time in two years – even if it was a rather meagre 0.1%.

Of course, we are still a long way off from full recovery, which is why the Chamber will continue to use our influence in lobbying the Government for more business friendly policies, such as a moratorium on additional business regulations and scrapping the planned increase in National Insurance for 2011.

Although official growth is only minimal, from talking to our members it seems that business confidence has improved significantly and many of you out there are looking optimistically towards the next year and beyond. The Chamber conducted a survey among our members before Christmas and the results showed that 65 per cent of respondents said that their business was performing better now than it was 12 months ago, with a fantastic 90 per cent saying that they are confident that their business would be performing either significantly better or slightly better in six months time.

York’s businesses will be presented with a number of opportunities over the next few months as we begin to see more significant signs of recovery, whether it be the opportunity to explore new markets, taking advantage of the low pound through increased exports or taking on new staff, and the Chamber offers its members a wide range of services which can help make all of these much simpler.
