York Central – It’s Not Over Yet

Last week saw York being dealt a potentially devastating blow when it was announced that the £1 billion York Central transformation scheme has been put on hold and the search for a developer suspended.

The chamber was extremely disappointed to hear this news, as the development is considered to be pivotal to the future success of our city, although we can also understand why the development was postponed as a result of the current economic climate, and in fact construction projects are being shelved through out the whole country and not just in York However, York is weathering the current economic downturn better than most, and I think this leaves potential for the development to still take place, which is why your chamber will increase its lobbying efforts to ensure that the transformation goes ahead. Yorkshire Forward has pledged to stay involved and we are extremely pleased by this. We will continue to work with Yorkshire Forward to raise awareness of how valuable this opportunity is to our city and ensure that they honour their commitment. The infrastructure in and around the York Central site is a huge issue for potential developers, which is why Your chamber will be petitioning regional and central Government as well at the EU for funding to put the necessary transport links and other infrastructure in place.

At your chamber we always encourage our members to get involved with our lobbying activity, and we would be interested in hearing your feedback on the York Central site and what you think should be done to secure future development. If you would like to get involved please email myself at susie.cawood@ynycc.co.uk I look forward to hearing from you.
