STARTING out at 16 years of age working in a cattle market, then as a builder’s labourer and for the civil service, Rob Burns finally found his calling in design and print and set up 9xb.com in 2004.
Today 9xb.com employs more than 30 staff and specialises in website design and development and online marketing campaigns featuring search engine optimisation, paid advertising and social media for clients including Marks & Spencer, Total, Pepsi and Shepherd Engineering.
As well as raising money for charity through the Great North Run, Knaresborough Bed Race, canoe marathons, beer festivals and bonfires, Rob has big plans for 9xb, adapting its services to meet changes in technology, he said.
“The internet is an increasingly important part of everyday life. Devices such as tablets and mobiles mean that users can access the internet whilst on the move and this convergence with traditional desktop computers is going to continue for a long time to come. Consumers’ buying habits are changing and brands need to put themselves where the customer is, and that’s where we come in.”
Which job (other than your own) would you like to have and why?
Sociologist – studying society and understanding the trends and how they impact on people’s lives is fascinating.
Greatest achievement?
Greatest achievement is undoubtedly having a great family with three wonderful children. Second greatest achievement is setting up 9xb.com and building the team to be one of the premier digital agencies in the country.
Biggest mistake?
I don’t think people make big mistakes. Your experiences, both good and bad, have all helped make you what you are and helped you arrive at your current destination.
What makes you most angry?
Corruption – people who will lie and cheat to try and make a quick buck.
What do you need to make life complete?
To maintain good health, friends and family.
Why do you make a difference?
By treating people fairly both in business and in life you build long-lasting relationships which help everybody involved, whether clients, suppliers or employees enjoy success.
Your epitaph
I’ll be back.
