Much has changed for BSC Filters since 1998, the glorious year when it clinched our overall title of Business Of The Year.
Since then it has switched its attention from the telecommunications industry to defence and aerospace, when it comes to making its revolutionary microwave and radio frequency filters.
The result: the high-tech manufacturing and engineering firm, steered by managing director Martyn Lee and employing 50 people at its base in Jorvik House, Outgang Lane, Osbaldwick, has announced its most successful financial year to date, with turnover growing 40 per cent to £4.155 million and profits nearly doubling.
Judges were hugely impressed with BSC’s “focus on, and ability to, add value across the organisation”.
Key to its recent success has been its Process Improvement Programme, allowing the company to treble the output of its machine shop while maintaining employee numbers.
The positive approach of the very close management team filtered down throughout the organisation, helped by a strong philosophy of nurturing talent.
With the help of Malton-based Derwent Training, it created its own apprenticeship scheme – and half of the BSC Filters machine shop staff are products of this.
Winner: BSC Filters
Finalists: EnviroVent and UK Juicers
