Software development company Isotoma is defying the economic downturn with a turnover of £1 million, compared with £800,000 in 2008.

The firm, which builds websites, started two years ago by Doug Winter and Andy Theyers, is thriving at its base in Fishergate, York.

Why? Because its websites let non-technical people create and maintain information using only a web browser. Perfect for websites or intranets, they offer superior security without sacrificing extendibility or ease of use.

It is hardly surprising that its website-building service has been snapped up by international blue-chip clients, including Nokia and EMI.

One of its biggest clients is Mindshare, with nearly 6,000 people working in 67 countries and 87 cities, a firm responsible for placing one third of all advertising worldwide.

Isotoma is also responsible for the UK Foundation site for Vodaphone, the largest mobile telecommunications network in the world.

All but one of its 26 employees are local.

For many graduates from York’s two universities and its college, Isotoma is a first port of call when it comes to recruitment.

Already they have orders that take them well into next year and have plans to continue expansion and recruit staff.

That financial steadiness and performance are due largely to organic growth. Doug and Andy have never borrowed money or taken outside investment. This has allowed it to grow with stability and confidence.

Judges were impressed with the company’s ethos of both staff and customer care.

The vast majority of their business is a result of referrals – a clear indication of how well they meet customers’ demands.
