Harrogate and District NHS Foundation Trust (HDFT) recognised the need for closer links with education across the community it serves in 2006.

Harriet Dow, head of its corporate affairs, said it created the post of education liaison officer to develop and deliver the first model of its kind for foundation trusts across the country.

HDFT staff, governors and local headteachers developed a pilot with five secondary schools across Harrogate and Ripon, which has since been rolled across to all Harrogate District schools.

It has held tours and activity days for students in hospitals, created a work experience policy and helps students with their careers planning, holding talks and mock interviews for students wanting to study medicine at university.

The HDFT now has a platform to contribute to the curriculum, take a responsibility for the development of its future workforce and develop its own staff.

“The role has truly helped to widen the perception of students, teachers and parents alike with regard to the range of careers and opportunities available within the NHS,” said Harriet.

The HDFT has entered Best Employer And Education Link in The Press Business Awards 2010.
