NEITHER Clive Scotter nor Michael Wright thought it would be easy when they set up their own construction firm after leaving Persimmon, the York-based national housebuilder.
But they knew the writing was on the wall for flats complexes for which there had been an overproduction – and they wanted to be ready for the collapse in the housing market.
So they set up Building And Renovation Services in Elm Park View, Heworth, on the basis that “there will always be a market for quality” and set about undertaking numerous building extension and other projects.
Now, with a second year turnover approaching £500,000, they and their team of four permanent staff hope to be reaping the rewards by topping the £1 million mark.
They also hope to clinch the Small Business Of The Year and Growth Business Of The Year titles in The Press Business Awards 2009.
Clive said: “Our business is based on the formula – ‘stick to what you do best and work hard’ – and two years later we have surpassed all expectations.”
Now members of the National House Building Council and the Federation of Master Builders, the two men claim theirs is the only building firm in North Yorkshire which is a member of the green registry and actively promote a sustainabole attitude towards their building methods.
They see as their big advantage the finesse of their expertise combined with speed.
These bring their own rewards. Clive said: “For example, we built an extension in Oaken Grove, Wigginton, which spawned seven more jobs by word of mouth.”
