HAVING launched one of the law industry’s biggest recruitment drives, York-based Minster Law seems to have a good claim for the Growth Business Of The Year title in The Press Business Awards 2009.
The firm, which in March announced it was taking on 150 more people – 50 of them in York and the remainder in Wakefield – has quickly become the largest road traffic injury and loss recovery practice in the UK, handling more than 40,000 injury claims each year.
Chief executive Matthew Brigg announced the jobs bonanza against a background of roughly 50 per cent year-on-year growth since 2005, with a 40 per cent expansion expected this year. With its range of services and products extending into other areas of law including wills, probate, conveyancing, employment law and consumer advice, it is on target to be a top 25 law firm by 2011.
Minster Law is also competing for the title of Best Employer and Education Link. One of its main corporate and social responsibility initiatives has been to develop a mutually beneficial working relationship with a school.
Through contacts with North Yorkshire Business Sand Education Partnership (NYBEP) links were established with Burnholme Community College in York.
Minster Law has developed a mentoring programme for its students studying for the Business and Finance Diploma over two years. Its purpose is to give students access to professionals who can expertly help and advise them. A by-product is that the contact will spark an interest in these professions as a career.
Last February, human resources representatives from Minster Law gave a presentation to Year ten Burnholme students on CV writing, interviewing and job searching techniques, with follow-ups in March and July .
Next month, the business and finance students will visit Minster Law’s office at Alexander House in Hospital Fields Road for a site tour and to learn more about company marketing and branding.
