Simply Holistic

MASSAGE could be the message – and the cure – for all suffering from the tension of the economic troubles.

Massage therapist Joanne “Joe” Bull believes her business, Simply Holistic in Park Lane, Holgate, York, could play a big role in relieving that tension – and with her client base growing by 72 per cent since she launched the venture in October, 2008, there is real evidence for her claim.

That is why she is pitching for the Small Business Of The Year title as well as the Women In Enterprise accolade in The Press Business Awards 2009.

Simply Holistic offers massage treatments tailored to clients, who come from all walks of life, including students, retirees, business owners and stay-at-home parents.

Joe, who in the 12 years she was a retail manager used complementary therapies to help her deal with the high-pressures of her job, so loved the “energised feeling” it gave her that she studied for two years to be qualified in holistic/therapeutic Thai yoga and Indian head massage.

A survey of her clients showed they would all recommend Simply Holistic to a friend – the method whereby two-thirds of them came for treatments in the first place.

Profits so far have been reinvested in extra training in presentational skills and a course to prepare her for “on site” massage therapy that will be available at the end of autumn.

She said: “My main business hurdle lies in challenging the preconceived ideas of what massage therapy consists of and the health benefits that it can encourage.

“Many still perceive massage as a luxury rather than a tried and tested traditional healing therapy that has soothed, beautified and invigorated many civilisations over the centuries.”
