Fulford Cross Nature Reserve joins UK record attempt

Residents of Fishergate and volunteers from the University of York got together as part of National Tree Week to make an attempt on the national record to plant the largest number of trees in one hour.

Local resident Jamie Wood co-ordinated York's involvement in the "Tree O'Clock" planting at Fulford Cross Nature Reserve. Thirty five helpers got stuck in with spades on a damp but sunny Saturday to introduce more indigeous tree species to the area.

Students from York University Conservation Volunteers had previously helped with clearance work and groups from Vanbrugh and Goodricke Colleges took up the challenge on the day.

Jamie Wood said, "The long term aim is to give Fulford Cross Nature Reserve more of an educational focus and there has been a lot of work done with the local schools to start this in motion but there's still a lot of heavy work still to be done and we're grateful for the involvement of more people today."

Cllr. Dave Taylor was invited to verify the number of trees planted as part of the record attempt. Dave said, "It was heartening to see around 35 volunteers doing something to improve the local environment and although the Nature Reserve is quite small, 71 trees were planted at Fulford Cross Nature Reserve."
