York's superb Roman Festival returned over 25th-26th October, for fun, education, an merriment.

This year the festival was mainly contained in Library Gardens, next to the Central Library off Museum Street. The 'Living History' camp was based there with Roman soldiers living, cooking, making craft items and recruiting young 'soldiers' into the Roman Army.

York Roman Festival is tremendous fun, especially for kids, and something which I've been keen to support over the last few years. Keith Mulhearn and Nick Eggleton deserve a medal for organising it. They're great enthusiasts and, despite the weather, made it a great weekend for all. They asked me to be Event Manager this year and conferred the Roman name of 'Sinister Dexter' upon me for the duration of the Festival. Love it!

Next year though... we've simply got to move it to May. My feet are still thawing out after two days of standing in the mud.
