I am pleased to hear of the resignation of the Metropolitan Police Chief, Sir Ian Blair.

It seems peculiar that someone who appeared to hold such racist views, certainly who made several racist comments, should have been allowed rise to the top policing job in the country.

The shooting to death of a Brazilian, Jean Charles de Menezes, at Stockwell Tube Station, was the defining moment of Blair's career.

Not only have the armed officers operating a Shoot-To-Kill policy never been named, but no-one has ever been charged with his killing, and no blame has been attached to the police in this severely botched operation.

What troubled me most about Sir Ian Blair was that the Metropolitan Police chose to maintain a number of lies about Jean Charles de Menezes: that he was wearing bulky clothing (lie), that he was challenged to stop (lie), that he ran from the police (lie), that he vaulted the barriers (lie).

These lies are not the actions of a nervous police recruit with a gun in his hands, or even the itchy-trigger-finger of an ex-soldier suffering flashbacks to a war zone. No - the lies of the Metropolitan Police were a cover-up and they maintained them as long as they could do so. Ian Blair should have gone from office at that instant. He should not have resigned. He should have been sacked and stripped of his knighthood.

It is not acceptable for armed officers to pump seven bullets into the back of the head of an innocent civilian on a crowded train.

It is not acceptable for The Met to target people because their skin is coffee-coloured.

And it is not acceptable to lie about it!
