As Heritage Champion I've urged the fire brigade chiefs not to abandon the station on Clifford Street and move fire engines away from the city centre. This will only put York's heritage at risk.

Residents of Fishergate and volunteers from the University of York got together as part of National Tree Week to make an attempt on the national record to plant the largest number of trees in one hour.

My next-door neighbour Jack Harland died peacefully in hospital on 4th September aged 83. He was an amazing character, hugely admired by his neighbours and, really, anyone with whom he came into contact.

Having been concerned about the design of the new Council HQ at Hungate, some weeks ago I started to ask for copies of the comments sent to the council by York Civic Trust, English Heritage, and the Commission for Architecture and the Built Environment (CABE).

On the fifth anniversary of the huge demonstration against bombing Iraq, I again travelled to London to take part in the continuing protests against this war which has led to the deaths of hundreds of thousands of Iraqi civilians, 4,000 US troops, 175 British service personnel and one of our Government scientists. We have to march in protest and we have to bring the troops home. Britain must regain the respect that it has lost in the world under Blair.
