I want to congratulate Professor Haleh Afshar on her appointment to the House of Lords.

Haleh taught me at the University of York, and her knowledge and integrity are not easily matched.

She has always stood up for equality of opportunity, for women and for minorities.

She has basically spoken up for fairness and those who cannot speak up for themselves.

Her work has been very inspirational to my politics and I wish her all the best.

She will definitely be a "people's peer" and if I am elected at the next general election I wish to emulate her good work. I know she will do a great job.
