Croydon's traffic tsar, Councillor Gerry Ryan, has said that Croydon Council's main objective in plastering the town with parking meters or CCTV cameras is NOT to bring in revenue to the council.
This statement has been received with rather more than scepticism by myself and countless others.
I requested the council, under the Data Protection Act, to furnish me with details of the sum accruing to the council via parking fees and penalty charge notices (drivers caught on camera).
The answers are as follows:
l Income generated from parking fees for financial year 2000/1 £1,767.384
l Bus Lane infringement fines 2000/1 £1,180.253
A total of £2,947.637!
I think these figures give the lie to Councillor Ryan and show that the motorist is being used.
