Well I’ve been commuting in to York by bus for the last few weeks, having always travelled to work outside the City by car in the past. I must say it has been an eye opener.
I’ve realised that I arrive in York without having had to:
- Negotiate tricky speed humps or ramps,
- Edge/Force my way into the line of traffic,
- Fight for a parking space,
- Worry whether I've paid the correct parking fee,
- Worry whether my car will still be in one piece when I get back.
I’m also getting a decent walk every day, to and from home and the bus stop, so I am actually fitter.
Yes I admit it, I’m a born again bus traveller
The only fly in the ointment is ear-blasters (sorry MP3 players) that most people carry these days. However, I’ve discovered the answer… buy your own. A very cheap version but it does
the trick if things get noisy. I didn’t feel so smug the other day when the battery went flat but the earphones seemed to keep the noise out anyway so I was happy.
The other fly (two flies in this ointment) is that I do get wet now when I’m walking to and from home to the bus stop and when I’m waiting in the centre of York. Minutes in the rain are
very long minutes.
My biggest problem now is what to do with the car that I use for about one day a week. Anybody want to rent a car?
PS. Only joking :-)
