I am starting to write the story of my life in selling and this is the Foreword to it.
Real life is all about people and people are all about life. There is no better occupation than selling, to learn about people and enjoy life in all its phases, moods and joys. My main credential for success was a belief that what I was selling was, in my mind, the best in it's field and to know the oppositions' products and services.
I would reccommend it to any young person wanting a career offering marvelous opportunities and challenges to progress. It offers the chance of earnings related to performance and building the trust and confidence in people to ensure repeat business.
Successful sales people succeed in bad times like these. Demand for good reliable sales people is never higher. Some of my most rewarding periods were in bad economal times when offers came my way.
At the age of 81, having enjoyed 17 years of retirement, I want to pass on to younger generations the wonderful opportunities which selling brought me, in return for the time and effort I put into it. These days, all the emphasis seems to be on higher education. I had the chance, but when it came to it I decided I wanted to get out to work instead of sitting the GCE. I never regretted it. I had a background of retail selling in the family. if you have the belief in yourself and crafts, trades, higher education, professions, politics, science etc. do not appeal, do not despair.
Selling can open many doors and be rewarding in many ways. I sold a wide range of products, over the whole country, to a wide range of people and could always go back and be welcome. I had no GCEs, diplomas or university experience. I hope you may be able to take something from my experiences.
