I was surprised to see so little comment on the start of the Scottish Independence Referendum process, leading to voting in 2014.

Instead we are burdened with daily stories about people running around with burning sticks that will eventually reach London to start a fire. I know it's exciting because I keep being told it is!

If it isn't the stick relay then it's the Jubilee. Fair do, the Queen has done a superb job through changing times and although I'm not a monarchist I suppose I am an Elizabethan. We couldn't have picked a better Queen if we'd had the chance to vote and selected one.

Even allowing for these stories there should have been more time to discuss Scottish Independence and why other countries in the Union are not being given the same opportunity. As an Englishman it feels a bit like the English are expected to make the United Kingdom work. That somehow we have committed some crime against these poor little countries and must pay in the jail of the United Kingdom. Spend more on them than on ourselves, allow them more freedom and representation than ourselves, deny ourselves the right to self determination. Still I suppose are even if the English don't get to vote it will turn out well, it did with the Queen so maybe democracy is overrated!

We are such a happy bunch aren't we. Just give us and Olympics and a Jubilee, a successful football team (York City) and a bit of Sunshine and we really couldn't give a stuff about and troubles at all. We just say sod it and pack up our troubles in our old kit bag and smile, smile, smile. I love being English!
