I joined The Friends of New Walk on Saturday morning for one of their occasional walks alongside the River Ouse.

We started, and finished, from La Place Verte, the cosy little cafe in The Motor House at Skeldergate Bridge. (Yeah! Use your local shops! I had a Belgian coffee and it was great.)

Anyway, The Friends of New Walk organise this walk to see how the riverside walk is improving, or deteriorating, and then lobby the Council to do something positive about the area.

Moreover, if the weather is good, like it was on Saturday, it's a nice walk along the tree-lined avenue created in the 1730s, during the reign of George II. It was one of England's first riverside walks, and purpose-built in Georgian times for posh people to promenade and be seen while taking the air.

We did some of that... but frankly we were less well dressed on this occasion.

Damaged trees, litter, and graffiti were noted for reporting to the Council. However, we also witnessed the beautiful carpet of Lesser Celandine (I confess I had to look it up) under the mature trees closer to Millennium Bridge.

Join The Friends of New Walk on the next outing. Worth turning out for.
