THIRTY years of service as a parish councillor in Wigginton has won official recognition for John Jeffery.

He was first presented with a certificate of long service by the Lord Mayor of York, Keith Hyman and the Sheriff, Paul Firth, and then the Old School meeting room was re-named The John Jeffery Room - a gesture which came as a complete surprise to him.

His wife, Wendy, was also presented with a bouquet of flowers for her support and contribution to the upkeep and bookings at the Old School.

Parish chairman Peter Vaughan said local councillors represented the local community on a wide range of issues and worked almost entirely without recognition, so it was fitting Coun Jeffery’s service had been recognised in this manner.

Last week, John was a runner-up in The Press Community Pride Awards.
