I really struggle to see the point of all this. It just seems like politicians creating yet more well paid roles for politicians although I'm surprised the £70,000 pa salary hasn't attracted more than just two candidates. Have the Lib-Dems given up?

Indeed! I thought this government was trying to cut down on unnecessary layers of bureaucracy.

You're right. And neither candidate has been shouting from the roof-tops. A lot of money - to do what...?

This is a completely pointless exercise, other than putting another politician onto a gravy train.

Rather than a badger cull we should be organising a politician cull - I can't see any reason for needing more than one or two for the whole country, ideally fewer.

Interesting that the story offers a link to more (and mainly complementary) articles about Potter, but none for Mulligan. How much has Labour been paying off The Press?

It is important to click on the Home Office blurb to the right of this posting and then to carefully read how the candidates intend to respond to the requirements of the job of Commissioner when their leaflet/pamphlet is published. Unless a cetegorical assurance that all of these requirements can be adequately met can be given then there is little point in giving them a vote. It will be interesting.

Yes - the Lib Dems have given up!

They are saying they are not standing because they don't agree with Police and Crime Commissioners. But they are putting up candidates in other (more Lib Dem leaning) parts of the country, so that's clearly not it. Especially since it was the Government they are part of that introduced the new role in the first place.

It's supposed to be a non-political appointment - so why are the candidates sponsored by political parties?
At least in East Yorkshire we have several independents standing for the Humberside Commissioner.

First I've heard about this locally, no flyers, no door to door, no posters up. There does not appear to be much choice either, politicians overseeing the police is hardly a good idea anyway, they are not going to be very impartial or independant are they? One party shows contempt for the police and the other thinks that they are corrupt.

The idea of this role is it will replace Police Authorities at no extra cost and the person is elected every four years and therefore accountable. It may or may not work but in North Yorkshire's case if we'd had someone who was answerable they might have got rid of the likes of Graham Maxwell a good deal faster than the Authority they are replacing.

I really think that we should be voting for the Chief Constable himself. Give 3 yrs and if he doesnt perform its back to the Traffic wardens dept.

If you like myself think this is just another gravy train exercise then dont vote.

The 'small' matter of a £5000 deposit to stand blocks most independents or small parties from standing candidates also - so much for an open democracy!

I agree, the North Yorks Police Authority badly let us down over Maxwell, he should have been sacked.

To be fair to the Press, it did print the story about Ms. Mulligan, when she was bitten by a dog, and she had to get treatment.

I think this is one Election the electrate should stay well clear off.Why should people with no experiance in Police work be given a post like this. And when we are all expected to cut our cloth so should the Goverment aspecialy this silly stupid idea.

Agreed - boycott the election. This is just a political stunt: by refusing to play, the public can ensure that the politicians who dreamed it up are made to look the fools they are.

This policy will inevitably politicise the police! These new postholders will be authorised to appoint and if necessary, sack Chief Constables, so, if these officers wish to keep their jobs or have contracts renewed, they will inevitably have to keep in with/act obsequiously towards these singular, P & CCs. Party political nominees should have been disqualified and only truly able/professional and independently minded people considered. We have the worse of both worlds here - the high risk of political interference and too many amateur appointees with a far too wide a remit of representation for a single postholder to be effective. Also, the cost to the council-tax payer to finance this new organisation is truly eyewatering, with appointees and senior staff far, far, over remunerated. Add to this, the cost of local boards of mainly, politically appointed placemen so as to guide and oversee the P&CC, then the cost and the bureaucracy becomes mind numbing!! One for repealing, come May, 2015?!

I believe he is a former police-officer who though originally from Yorkshire, served mainly with the Metropolitan Police in London before later in his career, returning to North Yorkshire and where he served in Ryedale. Now retired, he is an author and writer and uses his "rural" experiences to platform light-hearted books about his police duties when working with rural communities. These publications are akin to the "Constable" series that platformed the successful Heartbeat TV series. His literary catchphrase and title of his books is - "Now then lad!! " He could be a decent candidate, at least he has some police experience and a nice form of address to his Chief Constable when about to give them the heave-ho would be ! Now then lad(or more likely these days, lass!), sit yourself down for a chat!!

Totally agree with posted comments. How can we believe a politically sponsored Commissioner will follow the wishes of the electorate?
It will be just the same farce has we have in local politics where the Party Line takes preference over the wishes of the local people.
The argument that as they are elected will make them accountable is just rubbish, our local politicians are elected in the same way and they are certianly not.

When you search Mrs Mulligan you can find every Little about her
even on the the Conservative web site the only thing there is that she failed to take Leeds North West for the Conservatives no other real details to help you make up your mind if she would be any good for the job or she would be just a Conservative party lackey who would just follow Conservative party orders

It seem that she as not done anything that as been noteworthy locally or nationally Her web as just changed in the last 24 hours to give more information about her but then it is vage

http://juliamulligan
.org.uk/

and as a lot of ideas that are going to cost money to do without getting more police on the streets

Well it is a two horse race

Julia Mulligan - Conservative

or

Ruth Potter - Labour

And all the updated information on the two candidates makes it look like something that is not worth the time to go out to vote

It looks to me the Conservative and Julia Mulligan were keeping any information about her quite till the last minute so you could not research her fully beforehand even the local council she was a member of did not show much about her

But I have noticed that the dig at Ruth Potter over Ex chief Constable Grahame Maxwell when Ruth Potter was on North Yorkshire Police Authority as been removed when North Yorkshire Police Authority was and is full of Conservative and Lib Dems how can one member change any thing if the majority vote not to take proper action and let Grahame Maxwell and others resign so they get there pension rights in full instead of sacking them

Some one most of seen that it did not look good for Julia Mulligan and the Conservatives to try to score point that way as the Conservatives had the majority on North Yorkshire Police Authority

So this brings me back to is any of them worth the time to go out and vote for in my opinion no not really they are just another lot to pay for who will be able to use there power to form the police to there party wishes

.

Information about Julia Mulligan here
http://juliamulligan

PCCs have to be a better arrangement than a police authority that let a discredited Chief Constable continue in office and refused to sack him.

As a former member of the police authority Ruth Potter was part of the problem.
