ARMY signallers preparing to leave York for a tour of Helmand province attended a pre-deployment service.

More than 250 soldiers marched down the main street to St Oswald’s Church headed by their commanding officer, Lieutenant Colonel Colin Vaudin.

Second Signal Regiment, which is based at Imphal Barracks, has been training for the past year for its six-month tour of duty in southern Afghanistan, and the soldiers expect to leave at the end of the month.

The last training day for the soldiers saw them heading for Cawood Bridge near Selby to assist the civil authorities with sandbagging during the recent floods.

Lt Col Vaudin said: “It has been a busy year for us with all the training, and we were pleased to be able to help out in both Cawood and York during the floods.

“The service has allowed us some time for reflection and prayer before we head out to Afghanistan for six months, leaving behind families and loved ones.”
