Tickets to one of York’s true Christmas traditions will go on sale on Monday.

Carols in Kirkgate features singers in costume singing in the evocative setting of the recreated Victorian street at York Castle Museum.

Now in its 51st year, the York Philharmonic Male Voice Choir and the Kirkgate Singers will once again be performing a variety of well-known favourites and traditional carols complemented by a number of humorous and sentimental readings.

This year the museum will also be opening earlier to offer visitors the chance to sample festive food and drink in the café on the ground floor, which is accessible to all.

Charlotte Dootson, marketing manager for York Museums Trust, said: “Carols in Kirkgate is one of York’s most well-loved festive traditions. The carols are sung magnificently by the choirs on our atmospheric Victorian Street which will be decorated in traditional Yuletide style. The evenings are always popular and we are sure they will once again be the perfect way to get you into the Christmas spirit.”

The carols will take place from December 11 to 15 at 7.30pm. As well as the carols, the museum will open from 6pm to allow people to enjoy a selection of festive treats in the Castle’s café run by Elior.

Last year’s carols were a sell- out and those wanting to attend this year are advised to book early.

Tickets go on sale at the museum and by phone on 01904 687687 from 9.30am, priced £14.50 for adults and £12.50 for concessions (price includes a programme).
