PUPILS from a York school have had a taste of what it’s like to be in charge as part of Local Democracy Week.
The children, from Huntington Primary School donned child-sized mayoral robes and joined the Lord Mayor of York, Coun Keith Hyman, to learn more about the ancient civic role and its origins during a visit to the Mansion House.
They also played the role of councillors in a mock budget-setting meeting.
Their visit was one of a string of events organised by City of York Council to drive home the importance of local democracy.
They continue tonight with a free public lecture entitled York 800 Years Ago: The King, The Charter and The City in the council chamber at Guildhall at 6pm.
