MAJOR employers and education providers from across the region set up stalls at a York jobs fair – and were amazed by the response.
Job seekers flocked to yesterday’s free event at the Hilton Hotel, which was organised by City of York Council, Future Prospects, Job Centre Plus and Learning City.
Employers included Marks & Spencer, Toys R Us and Holiday Inn. Mel Hill, from Marks & Spencer, which was aiming to recruit about 100 seasonal staff for its York stores, said: “There was an unbelievable response.”
One job seeker, Joseph McGonigel, 17, from Bootham, said the fair had been very useful, while another, Nina Findlay, 21, from Haxby, said: “It’s really handy to have all the employers in one place.”
Council leader James Alexander said he had written to 3,500 jobseekers inviting them to attend the fair, which had been very well attended.

How sad that York as come down to the fact that these are the major companies , companies that once employed women on tills and shelf filling ,or as to holiday inn ,just chamber maids and bar staff and the like! All low paid jobs where the staff were once just somebodies wife doing a part time job to supplement the husbands income when the kids came along!
But now that York as very little to offer In proper jobs like it had 30 years ago , such a shame that the politicians involved (labour and Tory ) have decimated York to a city with crappy little jobs with low pay where the employees have to grovel to earn a minimum wage where they will never ever be able to afford a mortgage on a house!!

Why are job seekers 'invited' to attend things like this? Why isn't it compulsory and if they don't attend then stop their benefits?

I actually attended the jobs fair, and like oi oi I was slightly depressed about the employers there. As somebody wanting an entry level hands-on semi-skilled job, seeing employers that were just looking for either sitting at a computer tapping things in, changing beds, going beep beep beep on a till, wiping old peoples bums, or jobs that aren't even guaranteed set hours a week, is almost soul destroying. Where are the builders, the electricians, the plumbers, the joiners?
And I don't know whay Alexander is there, his council's desk were only offering casual jobs - which is about as much use as getting upgraded to first class on the Titanic for jobseekers... to get off jobseekers you need to work at least 16 hours a week (Pizza Hut: take note SIXTEEN, not FIFTEEN), and all the council employ are stuff where you might do 2 hours one week and 22 the next.
I think the only really useful stand at that jobs fair was the one where you could sign up for eligibility to get an SIA license.... because that license then opens up opportunities to more job vacancies: something the job centre and it's various 'providers' fail to recognise when they dont fund things like that.
