Job seekers flock to fair

MAJOR employers and education providers from across the region set up stalls at a York jobs fair – and were amazed by the response.
Job seekers flocked to yesterday’s free event at the Hilton Hotel, which was organised by City of York Council, Future Prospects, Job Centre Plus and Learning City.
Employers included Marks & Spencer, Toys R Us and Holiday Inn. Mel Hill, from Marks & Spencer, which was aiming to recruit about 100 seasonal staff for its York stores, said: “There was an unbelievable response.”
One job seeker, Joseph McGonigel, 17, from Bootham, said the fair had been very useful, while another, Nina Findlay, 21, from Haxby, said: “It’s really handy to have all the employers in one place.”
Council leader James Alexander said he had written to 3,500 jobseekers inviting them to attend the fair, which had been very well attended.
