COLLEAGUES of a York vet who died as a result of a road accident have raised more than £1,500 for a head injuries charity.

Alasdair Stuart, who worked at Minster Veterinary Practice, based in Salisbury Terrace, was badly injured when his car left the road while driving back to his home city of Edinburgh late last year to celebrate New Year with friends and family. Having suffered serious head injuries, Alasdair, 30, died in hospital in Edinburgh in March.

Senior practice nurse Tracey Pulleyn said he had joined the practice in the summer of 2011 and his wife, Louise, had joined shortly after, with the couple living in Acomb.

“Together, they contributed hugely to the small animal department of the practice,” she said.

His advanced knowledge of small animal medicine, combined with his genuine love and care for the animals he treated, endeared Alasdair to all who worked with him, she said.

“Alasdair touched all of us. His kindness, joyous sense of humour and insatiable zest for life made him a true credit to the profession he was so proud to be a part of.

“His passing was a great loss to us all, a life tragically cut short but well lived.”

She said members of the practice took part in the Sutton Park 10k at Sutton on the Forest in Alasdair’s memory earlier this month, and so far had raised more than £1,500 for the charity Headway, which was dedicated to helping and supporting people and affected by brain injuries and their families.

The staff members who took part in the run, along with partners and friends, were Jo Malone, Katie Tallett, Emma Darling, Alison Russell, Graeme Stevens, Anna Fairley, Victoria Beasley, Romilly Haslam, Lisa Cuthburt, Emma Tolliday, Catherine Luke and Leni Corrand. Tracey said that one of the vets, Mark Goodman, who was on holiday in Spain, also ran 10 kilometres on the morning of the race to raise additional funds.
