7:41am Tuesday 16th October 2012 in News
YORK family building business, the Shepherd Group, has topped the Sunday Times Top Track 250 league table.
The business was ranked first out of Britain’s leading mid-market private companies, reaching higher than national household names such as Aston Martin, Betfred, Nando’s, Pret a Manger, Selfridges and Yeo Valley.
Shepherd Group reached the top spot by increasing sales by 15 per cent to £607 million in 2011, despite the continued difficulties in the construction market, with its subsidiary Portakabin in particular helping to drive growth. The business, which employs 3,187 people, made a profit of £24 million.
It figured alongside 17 other Yorkshire businesses, which between them achieved combined sales of £5.4 billion and employed 37,275 people.
R&R Ice Cream, based at Leeming Bar, Northallerton, which employs 2,322 people, was ranked in 41st place with sales of £434.8 million and profit of £25.9 million.
Clothing manufacturer Dewhirst, based in Driffield, was ranked at 172nd place. The business, which employs 8,156 people, recorded sales of £225.5 million and profit of £8.7 million.
Encon, an insulation distributor based in Wetherby, was also ranked at 207.
