THOUSANDS of racing fans attended York Races for a special Yorkshire countryside themed meeting.

About 8,500 people attended yesterday with more expected to head to the racecourse today for the last meeting until May next year.

Malton trainers Tim Easterby and Richard Fahey both had winners and punters were also treated to a countryside market showcasing Yorkshire produce, geese herding and even a falconry display complete with an owl from Eagle Eyed Falconry, in Acomb.

James Brennan, head of marketing for the racecourse, said: “Considering the downpour of rain on Thursday night, it has been a wonderful day racing.

“It has been a little fresh, but out of the wind it’s still jolly pleasant.

“People are enjoying the Champagne terrace.”

Mr Brennan said today would see a performance by the band of the Coldstream Guards.
