Fears for out of hours GP service

FEARS have been raised over the future of an out of hours GP service in North Yorkshire due to doubts about the position of its current provider.

Harrogate District NHS Hospital Foundation Trust took over the service in areas around York, Selby, Hambleton, Richmondshire and Craven, as well as Harrogate, and is overseeing it in the period before NHS North Yorkshire and York hands over its health responsibilities to new Clinical Commissioning Groups.

But the trust is now unable to continue to meet the needs of patients in the area. A spokesman for NHS North Yorkshire and York said the CCGs were now “considering their options with respect to the retendering of the service”.

I understand that the current OOH service has relied on just one GP to cover the York and Selby area over the past year or so under the management of NHS York & North Yorkshire PCT,
This Out of Hours Service, that is currently managed by the adjacent Harrogate District NHS Trust (and NOT the local Vale of York CCG (Clinical Commissioning Group)) is just NOT fit for purpose and I hope that everyone will support the local CCG in pressing for a more equitable service.
There is an Open Vale of York Patient & Public Forum at the York CVS Priory St Centre from 6-9pm on the 22 November and I hope that this will be on the agenda and that your views will be expressed.
Unless the public protest at the current financial problems, it is likely that further reductions in health services will be forced upon us.
