Mothers’ club stalwart Barbara Harrand dies aged 77

A FORMER carer and founding member of the Selby and District Mothers’ Club, Barbara Harrand, has died at the age of 77.
Mrs Harrand, who lived in Burn, was one of the original members of the club, which this year marked its 50th anniversary after being set up to create a support network of new mums with regular get-togethers.
She was also a member of the St Wilfrid’s Church Choir and played guitar in the church fun club for children of the congregation.
The Rev Peter Watson, of St Wilfrid’s, said Mrs Harrand was a “joyful” person who would be greatly missed.
He said: “She was a really dedicated member of the choir and had a beautiful voice.
‘‘Music was one of her passions and she would really enjoy using her voice to lead others in worship.
“They used to sing ‘we are the Friday fun club, we play in Barbara’s band’. She was such a joyful member of the team. Parents and carers loved her to bits and I think there will be quite a few of them at her service on Monday.”
Doreen Holmes is a former home care manager with social services in the district and worked with Mrs Harrand, who was a senior home care assistant, for several years.
She said: “Barbara was a very good worker and a brilliant carer to her many clients.”
Mrs Harrand died at St Leonard’s Hospice, surrounded by her family, after a year-long battle with cancer.
Mr Watson said: “Last month, as she got particularly unwell, I spent quite a bit of time with her and she had a very deep faith in God and that really sustained her. The fellowship she received here at the church really helped her and she was very much loved and will be greatly missed by us all. She was very special indeed.”
Mrs Harrand is survived by her children, Paul and Julie, and her sisters, Audrey and Lucy.
A service will be held at St Wilfrid’s Church, Brayton, on Monday at 1.30pm. Mrs Harrand’s family have asked for donations in lieu of flowers to the church or York Against Cancer, and no black clothing.
